MITCHELL COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Oscar O. "Red" Wilson, 6 Jun 2005 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- BAKERSVILLE - Oscar O. "Red" Wilson, 85, of Elkins Road, Bakersville, died Monday, June 6, 2005 A native of Avery county, he was the son of the Late Lee Roy and Elizabeth McKinney Wilson. An Army veteran of WWII, he served in Patton's Army, was wounded in Sicily and was awarded the Purple Heart. Wilson was an honored and highly respected musician. He was a recipient of the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce Living Legend Award, the North Carolina Heritage Award and was recognized by the North Carolina Arts council as a "Living Legend." He was a master craftsman fiddle maker and was the owner/operator of Mayland Recording Studios in Spruce Pine. Survivors include his wife Marie G. Wilson of the home, one sister, Rexie Ward, one son, Roger Wilson of Bakersville, a daughter Ann Castro, one grandson and one granddaughter, and special daughter, Regina Jarrett Jones. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at 8 p.m. in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home. The Rev. Billy Stewart officiated. Burial was in the Mountain Home Veterans Cemetery in Johnson City, TN. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the time of the service.
