He was the son of the late Dent and Floy Hall Weatherman. A U.S. Navy veteran, he earned the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service and National Defense Service Medal. He was a former employee of Mitchell Distributing, and service manager for Theo Brothers and L.B. Smith Company. Upon retirement, he owned and operated Avery Distributing in Columbia, SC before returning to Spruce Pine. Survivors include his wife, Nella Jo Franklin Weatherman; daughters, Sharon Wood and Sonia Stewart, both of Columbia, SC; a son, Allen Weatherman of Columbia; sisters, Clara Rathbone of Dallas, Cora Robinson of N. Ridgeville, OH, and Celena Pritchard and Crandle McClellan, both of Spruce Pine; brothers, Carl and Conrad “Grit” Weatherman, both of Spruce Pine, and Carver Weatherman of Morganton; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Rev. Roland McClellan officiated. Burial followed in Green Valley Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
