   MURDER -- REV. JOHN E. CHAMBERS, living in Montgomery County, near the line 
between Montgomery and Richmond, and within three miles of Pekin, we 
understand, was found dead on Thursday night last, about 12 o'clock, under 
circumstances that lead to the belief that he was murdered. On the afternoon 
of Thursday, he started in pursuit of a runaway Negro that had been lurking 
for some time in the neighborhood, and in about two hours after he left home, 
his horse, riderless, and apparently very much frightened, went to the 
premises of DR. EWING, the nearest neighbor of REV. CHAMBERS. REV. CHAMBERS, 
not making his appearance, his son and a son of DR. EWING started to look for 
him and continued to do so until his body was found at the hour mentioned 
above. It was found in a creek (about a mile from its mouth) emptying into 
Little River, where attempts had been made to conceal it. Logs and dead wood 
had been thrown in upon it, concealing all but one leg, which floating upon 
the water, attracted the attention of the dogs the party had to aid them in 
the search. On an exmination of the body, 16 buckshots were found lodged in 
the left side. It was at first generally charged that the Negro, MR. CHAMBERS 
was in pursuit of was guilty of killing him. But we had a rumor in town on 
Tuesday morning that circumstances had transpired to fix the crime upon 
certain of his own Negroes, and that they had been arrested and lodged in jail.
In the absence of any more definite information, we give the rumor for what it 
is worth. MR. C. was a local preacher of the Methodist persuasion.
