When they came here is unknown, but we do know that they were here long before the start of the Revolutionary War. The progenitor of our branch of the family was John C. Wicker who was born in Moore County about the year 1832. He was married to a cousin whose given name was Martha Ann Margaret Wicker. Martha Ann, as she was more affectionately known, was born in Moore County in 1835, and died at her home in Red Springs, Robeson County on March 5, 1910. In 1870 we find that she was listed as the head of household in Sloan’s Township in Moore County. At that time she was listed as a widow, with the following children in the home: Flora, age 18; Evander D, 15; Jesse L., 14; James C. [actually was Jane Catherine, and was listed as a female in the census], 12; Mary L., 9; and Charles J., 5 years of are. By the time of the 1880 census, Martha Ann Wicker was no longer living in Moore County; however, we do find that three of the children; namely: Charley J., age 14; Katie C., 20; and Mary L., age 17 were living in a household to themselves in Jonesboro Township in Moore County. Although it is not known when, Martha Ann, left the farm in Moore County and moved to Wilmington. There she was married to one John Moore on July 17, 1879. He was a son of Patrick and Ann Moore of New Hanover County. The next reference we find of the family was three years later when she and some of her children and settled in Stewartsville Township, in present day Scotland County, North Carolina. The old Laurinburg Presbyterian Church stands as a monument of Presbyterianism in Laurinburg, and it was at this old church that the Wicker family connected themselves to upon their arrival to Scotland County. On October 21, 1882 Martha Ann Margaret Wicker Wicker Moore was received by into the fellowship of the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church by Certificate from the Second Presbyterian Church of Wilmington. That same day her daughters, Jane Catherine Wicker and Mary Lawing Wicker Hart were also received by Certificate from their childhood religious home, Buffaloe Presbyterian Church in Moore County. John C. Wicker and his wife Martha Ann Margaret Wicker Wicker, were the parents of six known children. There children were as now follows: 1) Flora Ann Wicker, born about 1852, and died sometime after 1870. 2) Evander D. Wicker, born about 1855, and died sometime after 1870. 3) Jesse Livingston Wicker, born on February 6, 1858 in Moore Co NC, and died in Durham, NC on April 15, 1900. He was married to Catherine Marie Shields. According to my great aunt, Annie Hart Wentz. “Uncle Jesse Wicker, my mama’s brother, was a Presbyterian Preacher, and was buried at Carthage Presbyterian Church in Carthage, North Carolina”. 4) Jane Catherine Wicker, called “Katie”, was born in October 1859. On February 5, 1885 she was married to Wiley D. Lowe at her mother’s residence in Stewartsville Township. He was a son of W. A. and Jane Lowe. 5) Mary Lawing Wicker, born October 8, 1862 at Sanford, Moore [now Lee] Co NC, and died February 21, 1946 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co NC. On December 21, 1881 she was married in Wilmington, New Hanover Co NC to James Franklin Hart. 6) Charles J. Wicker, born on June 10, 1865. On February 22, 1893 he was married in Stewartsville Township, Scotland County to Olivia W. Hunter, who was a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. S.J. Hunter of Laurinburg. At the time of their marriage his residence was listed as “Georgia”. On April 3, 1894 she was dismissed by Certificate from the Laurinburg Church to the Abbeville Presbyterian Church. By the year 1900 they were then living in Montgomery, Alabama. He died on December 20, 1924 at Graceville in Jackson County Florida. Both he and his wife were buried in Montgomery, Alabama.
