Became teacher;
assisted in organizing pub. schs. of Durham and Winston;
joined faculty Peace Inst., Raleigh, 1886;
State Inst. conductor, 1889-92, and conducted teachers' insts. in nearly every 
co. of the State.
Has been supt. summer Normal schs;
pres. NC Teacher's Assembly;
mem. exec. com. bd. trustees Univ. of NC;
chmn. of com. of Teachers' Assembly which secured, 1891, the establishment of 
an ann. appropriation of NC State Normal and Industrial Coll., which he 
organized in 1892 and of which he is now pres.;
sec. and dist. dir. of the Southern Ed'n Bd.
