He - Why, certainly. For instance, if I awake in the morning and it is raining hard I know that it is the sign of a wet day Mr C J Shaw had new Irish potatoes for dinner one day last week. They were dug from his garden that day, some of them being larger than hen eggs. This eclipses anything yet heard of If you want Seed Oats, Bacon, Corn, Flour, Meal, Ship Stuff, Landreth’s Fresh Garden Seeds, Farmers & Planters almanacs, Sugar, Coffee, new Orleans and Porto Rico Molasses, Tobacco, Cigars and Snuff, Drugs and Stationery, at lowest Cash prices, call on B J McIver DIED - on the 15th inst, Dr Colin Bethune, of Keyser; aged 53. He was found dead in the road near Keyser, and heart disease is thought to have been the cause of his death. He leaves a large family to mourn his loss. He was a brother-in-law of Dr J C Blue, of this place, and was a prominent physician In connection with the fire last Saturday night, a right amusing incident occurred at Mr A W Campbell’s. He has a country negro waiting boy, not quite so wise as Solomon. On the previous morning he was soundly berated for being so late about getting a fire started in the cook stove, and cautioned to e earlier in the future. That night some one gave the alarm, "fire! fire! fire!" The boys was aroused by the cries, and thinking they were given to warn him that it was time to make his fire, went at it, and when Mr C returned from the fire, found that the boy had a big fire in the stove, and everything in readiness to cook breakfast, and it about midnight. SLIGHT FIRE - On last Saturday night about 12 o’clock, Mr A M D Williamson’s barn was discovered on fire. He succeeded in getting his mules and several head of cattle out, but his corn, about 50 bushels, and a small quantity of forage, &c, was burned. Loss, about $100. The fire is supposed to have been in incendiary origin. Hr. Howard Muse was the worst excited man at the fire. In running across the lot between his store and Mr. Fagan’s house, he struck a snag or something with his foot, and succeeded in turning as neat a somerset as any circus acrobat could do. He recovered himself, however, and continued on his "still hunt" for Will - The Home Paper - The individual who pays the subscription price in support of his home paper, gets the full worth of his money with compound interest; for, besides giving the local news concerning the movements and wherabouts of acquaintances and friends, it is a compendium of general information, in fact a first class encyclopedia. It gives you political, educational and religious news items that are well worth preserving. A yearly volume of any home paper contains matter worth far more to you than books of reference. Consider for a moment the care, the work, the tedious and arduous labor expended by the editor and typos in getting out each issue; then, the immense amount of free advertising the paper contributes to your home and interests, in booming your city and your county, by noting it’s progress, etc., and ask yourselves if it does not fully earn every dollar received. HEALTH HINTS Don’t contradict your wife Don’t tell a man he is a stranger to the truth because he is smaller than yourself. Errors of this kind have been known to be disastrous. Never go to bed with cold or damp feet. Leave them beside the kitchen fire, where they will be handy to put on in the morning It is bad to lean your back against anything cold, particularly when it is an icy pavement, upon which your vertebral arrangement has caromed with a jolt that shakes the buttons off your coat Always eat your breakfast before beginning your journey. If you haven’t any breakfast, don’t journey After violent exercise - like putting up the stove or nailing down carpets - never ride around town in an open carriage. It is better to walk. it is also cheaper When hoarse speak as little as possible. If you are not hoarse, it won’t do you any harm to keep your mouth shut, too Don’t light the fire with kerosene. Let the hired girl do it. she hasn’t any wife and children; you have Don’t’ roam around the house in your bare feet at the dead of night trying to pick up stray tacks. men have been known to dislocate their jaw through this bad practice. Never treat your mother-in-law with disrespect. Families have been broken up through a disregard of this rule; also heads have suffered When you see a man put the lighted end of a cigar in his mouth, don’t ask him if it is hot enough. Serious injury has often resulted from this habit STATE SS CONVENTION The Executive Committee of North Carolina Sunday School Association request us to state to public that the time for holding the state convention at Wilmington has been changed from April 9th, 10th and 11th, to Feb 25th, 26th, and 27th, 1890 MERCHANTS’ PURCHASES FOR LAST SIX MONTHS OF 1889 We publish below a list of the Moore County merchants, giving the amount of the purchases of each for the six months ending Jan. 1st, 1890.
