MOORE COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - William M. Maness, 22 Jun 1944 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- MOORE COUNTY NEWS June 22, 1944 Once Prosperous Merchant Dies in Moore County Home William M. Maness, one time well-to-do merchant and farmer of the Putnam section, died Thursday at the Moore county home where he had been an inmate for the past 10 years. He was 83 years of age. Pneumonia, which he contracted as a result of a fall, was the immediate cause of his death. He also suffered from a heart ailment and had been very feeble for the past six months. The deceased did a very thriving business at his Putnam store until it was destroyed by fire about 20 years ago. He also once owned a nice little farm. Funeral services were conducted Friday morning from Friendship Baptist church with Rev. W.S. Golden, pastor of the Carthage Presbyterian church, officiating. Mr. Maness, however, was a member of the Cool Springs Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Fred Phillips and Mrs. Beulah Stone; and one son, William Robert Maness of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. His wife, the former Miss Nannie Davis, a daughter, Miss Kate Maness, and a son, George Maness, one time clerk in the Carthage post office, preceded him to the grave. (NOTE: William M. Maness was the son of William Judson and Mary Ann Phillips MAYNOR of Moore County and was born on 3-10-1861. His father and uncle (Joseph Maynor) served in the Civil War ~ Co. E, 44th Infantry "Chatham County Turtle Paws." His grandparents were William and Chloe Phillips Maynor of Chatham County. At his death, Mr. Maness was also survived by 3 brothers and sisters: Malisia Alice Maynor MacKenzie, Alexander A.
