Powers BENNETT — Lydia Anne Sheffield Powers, 75, of Bennett, passed away on July 9, 2007, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. The daughter of John and Bertha Sheffield of Carthage, she was born on Feb. 20, 1932. She graduated from Carthage High School and Carson Beauty College in Fayetteville and worked as a hairdresser until the time of her death. On June 9, 1951, she married Herbert Wilton Powers of Bennett. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Dannie Sheffield; father and mother-in-law, Herbert and Sarah Powers; and sister-in-law, Vida Davis. In addition to her husband, six children and 15 grandchildren survive her. Angela P. Miles and husband, Phillip, of Hilton Head, S.C.; and children, Alicia, Jeremy and Heather; Teresa P. Phillips and husband, Joseph, of Carthage; and their children, Travis, Tiffany and husband, Chris Maness; Sheila P. Sessoms and husband, Ricky, of Ramseur; and children, Sarah, Bethany and Caleb; Marlene P. Kennedy and husband, Frankie, of Highfalls; and children Daniel, Julia and husband, Jonathan Russell; Douglas W. Powers and wife, Joan, of Bennett; and children, Melissa, Matthew and wife, Nikki; Jonathan A. Powers and wife, Debra; and children, Jordan, Eric and Catherine. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Barbara Sheffield of Granite Falls, sister-in-law, Beuna Phillips and husband, Alton, of Siler City; brother-in- law, Clinton Powers and wife, Shirley, of Marthaős Vineyard, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends and loved ones are invited for viewing at Bennett Baptist Church, Bennett, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the church sanctuary. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Visitation with the family will immediately follow the service in the new fellowship hall and other times at the home.
