References to Popular Spring branch and Shepard's branch are frequently seen in Cook and Grice deeds of the period. This area, known as the Old Fields (various spellings) district was taken from Nash County in 1856 to form a part of the new County of Wilson. DEEDS North Carolina Nash County This indenture made and agreed on this the Tenth of March one thousand eight hundred and forty two between Lazarus Cook of the State of North Carolina and County of Nash of the one part and Andrew Cook of the state and county aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of seventy five dollars to me in hand paid by the sd. Andrew Cook at or before the signing and sealing of these presents the rest hereof I do acknowledge have bargained, sold and conveyed unto the sd. Andrew Cook a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the state and county aforesd. and bounded as follows: beginning at a Popular in the branch and runs south 281 poles to (a) Pine then east 57 poles to a White Oak near the run of Shepherd Spring Branch then north 281 poles to a Pine thence west 57 poles to the beginning containing one hundred acres be the same more or less and I the sd. Lazarus Cook do bind myself, my heirs and assigns and do by these presents warranty and defend the title of the above {word lined through} tract of land unto the sd. Andrew Cook, his heirs and assigns, forever free and clear from all claims of any denomination in witness where unto I have set my hand and seal the day and date above written. The unit of measurement used to describe the //land involved in this deed was the "pole" which equates to approximately 16.5 feet. The land described in this deed, which //was in Nash County in 1842, is now in Wilson County, N.C.
