Kornegay, Dr. John L. Lane, and Dr. Walter Staley as a general hospital of forty beds serving Eastern North Carolina...The Rocky Mount Sanitarium Nurses Training School opened in conjunction with the hospital...in 1922 the Sanitarium was sold to a Franciscan Order of nuns who operated the hospital for one year. At the end of that year, the nuns sold the hospital back to Kornegay...in 1920, the hospital was enlarged by adding a wing on the Church Street side and remodeling the original building...in 1934, the hospital was enlarged by adding a separate obstetrical department of 12 beds...in 1952, a total interior renovation was undertaken. The hospital was completely air conditioned, a sprinkler system was installed...It was with great regret that in 1950 the Sanitarium found it necessary to close the Nurses Training School. From 1913 to 1950, many competent nurses graduated from this school...In addition to the three founders mentioned in the opening paragraph, some of the physicians who have played a part in the early history of the Rocky Mount Sanitarium are the late Dr. D.L. Knowles, the late Dr. George Wimberly, Dr. Richard Speight, Dr. E.R. Hines, the late Dr. A.L. Daughtridge, Dr. Richard S. Anderson, and the late Dr. William Dixon...Brookwood Health Services, Inc. took over management of the Rocky Mount Sanitarium in January, 1977."
