References to Popular Spring branch and Shepard's branch are frequently seen in Cook and Grice deeds of the period. This area, known as the Old Fields (various spellings) district was taken from Nash County in 1856 to form a part of the new County of Wilson. 1849 Will of Lazarus Cook of Nash County, N.C. //Text of Will// In the name of God Amen. I, Lazarus Cook of Nash county North Carolina Being in proper helth of Body, mind and memory and having thought proper to make publish and ordain this my Last Will and Testament as in manner and form following, viz: My will and devise is that as much of my parishnable property Be Sold as Will Satisfy my just debts after which I lend unto my Beloved wife Sally Cook The use of my land and other property During her natriel life, and after her death my parishnable property Be Sold and Equally devided Between all my children, viz - Andrew J. Cook Lucy Mary Martha Levenea Nancy and Celia Cook all so my Two granchildren Edwin and Marthenea Cook To Both have a part as one of the Rest of my children my Will and devise is That Martha Levenea and Celia Cook To have The use of my land after thare mothers Death During The Time tha live a single life and after thare Death or Marage to Be Sold and equally devided Between all my above named children I give unto my son Andrew J Cook one Dest of Draws I give unto Martha Cook one Bed and Furniture I give unto Levenea Cook one Bed and furniture I give unto Celia Cook one Bed and furniture And lastly I constitute nomonate and appoint Andrew J Cook Executor to this my Last Will and Testament in witness whareof I have hearunto Set my hand and Seal This 8th day of January - 1849 Signed: Lazarus Cook (Seal) Witnessed by James F.
