State of North Carolina
New Hanover County

Know all men by these presents that we L. N. Marsteller, Miles Costin, James T. 
Miller & Bernard Baxter are held and firmly bound unto the State aforesaid in 
the just and full sum of fourteen thousand dollars current money of the said 
state to the payment whereof we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and 
administrators justly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our 
seals and dated this ninth day of September AD 1844.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bounden L. 
N. Marsteller has been duly elected Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter 
Sessions for the county aforesaid for the term of four years from and after the 
13th day of September AD 1841 according to law. Now therefore if the said L. N. 
Marsteller shall well and truly receive account for and pay over to the person 
or persons entitled to receive the same all public monies accruing to him by 
virtue of his said office of Clerk where money from taxes, suits, attorney 
licenses, fines, announcements, forfeitures or otherwise, and shall duly account 
for and pay over to the person or persons entitled to receive the same all other 
monies that shall come into his hands by virtue of his said office and shall at 
all times keep safely the records of his said Count and shall from time to time 
and at all times do and perform all things whatsoever shall be required by his 
duties and responsibilities as Clerk of the said Count according to law, then 
the foregoing obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and 
virtue.
