Power of Attorney from James Potts Et Al to J. Burgwin and William Campbell, 
1785

Whereas the Reverend John McDowell late minister of the Parish of St. Philip 
Brunswick in the county of New Hanover and state of North Carolina in America 
deceased duly made and published his last will and testament in writing 
bearing date on or about the third day of August 1762 and thereby bequeath his 
fortune unto his son John Baptist McDowell but if it should please God to take 
his on in his minority then he bequeath his fortune in this manner viz:

To Mrs. Jane McDowell the daughter of Mrs. Eleanor Bruce of Castle-rea near 
Belfast he left the sum of fifty pounds sterling. The remainder to be equally 
divided among the children of his late sister Margaret Murchland and his 
brother and sister Thompson and their children everyone sharing an equal part 
and of his said will be appointed several gent'l therein named to be the 
executors as by the said will relation thereunto being had may more fully 
appear and whereas the said John Baptist McDowell died in his minority and the 
said Mrs. Jane McDowell died in the lifetime of the said John McDowell whereby 
her said legacy became lapsed and sunk into the remainder of her personal 
estate.

The fortune of the said John McDowell or right agreeable to his will now 
belongs to the children of his sister the said Mary Murchland named Mary Potts 
otherwise Murchland now the wife of James Potts of Belfast in the county of 
Antrim and kingdom of Ireland Merch't; Sarah Drew otherwise Murchland now the 
wife of William Drew of Belfast aforesaid Tavern Keeper; Martha Gordan 
otherwise Murchland now the wife of James Gordan of Belfast aforesaid 
Shoemaker; Marg't Dobbin otherwise Murchland now the wife of Sam'l Dobbin of 
Belfast aforesaid Mariner; Jane Murchland Spinster; William Thompson of 
Belfast aforesaid Baker; Mary Thompson otherwise McDowell his wife sister of 
the said John McDowell deceased and their children namely, James Thompson, 
Mary Thompson and Jane Thompson.

J. Burgwin and William Campbell of New Hanover County, NC were granted power 
of attorney by the families to be their lawful attorneys in the last will and 
testament, estate and effects of the said John McDowell deceased.

In witness whereof our affixed hands and seals at Belfast in Ireland the 9th 
day of May, 1785. Witness was Henry Foy.
