New Hanover County, NC - Military - Thomas DeVane Settlement, 1794 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DEVANE, Thomas, of New Hanover County, states that in June 1778 he commanded a company of 9 mos. men and continued in the service for 14 mos., sent his papers to Warrinton and failed to get a settlement even after exhibiting his accounts to the Commissioners at Hillsborough. Jas. PEARL, Capt. in the Continental Line, made oath in Cumberland Co. on 6 Nov. 1792 that sd Devane was "an Levy Officer Rank of Captain" and joined the Rendesvous with the Levy Soldiers for 9 mos. march, completing the term of 9 mos. Theophilus WILLIAMS of Duplin Co. swears sd Devane was chosen a Capt. of the Nine Months Men and was commissioned as such by the Governor of the State, commission bearing the date 1 June 1778. Freck BARFIELD, J.P. on 28 Nov 1792 in Duplin County, states he was in the Company with Daniel WILLIAMS in search of Continental deserters in which Devane assisted. Morris FENNELL of Duplin County corroborates the account. Nicholas FENNEL, before a J.P. in Sampson Co. 24 Dec. 1793, swore that on 1 June 1778 sd Devane complied as stated above. In Senate 21 Dec. and House 28 Dec. 1793. Referred to Committee.
