New Hanover County, NC - John Devane Revolutionary War Pension ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ October 29, 1934 Miss Margaret Fennell Harrisonburg, Virginia Dear Madam: Reference is made to your request for the records of John Devane and Francis Davis, soldiers of the Revolution. The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim W.3861 based upon the military service of John Devane. He was born December 25, 1755, place not stated. He was the son of John Devane. While a resident of New Hanover County, North Carolina, he served with the North Carolina troops as follows: from late in 1775 he served six months as private in Captain John Devane's (his father) company in Colonel Lillington's regiment and was discharged in June, 1776; in 1776 he served one month as private in Captain Thomas Devane's company (relationship between Thomas and John Devane not given); in the fall of 1777 John Devane was commissioned first lieutenant and served in Captain Ellis' company until July, 1780, when he was taken prisoner but was released on parole in a few days; he broke his parole and in 1781 served two tours of three months each as captain of a company of New Hanover County cavalry under Colonel Thomas Bludworth. He married October 25, 1785, Mrs. Ann Julan Evans who was born June 30, 1768. Her maiden name was Davis. John Devane died June 15, 1802. His widow, Ann Julan, was allowed pension on her application executed July 2, 1839, at which time she was living in New Hanover County, North Carolina. She died February 13, 1845. In 1855 the only surviving children of John and Ann Julan Devane were Ann Devane who married J.C. Devane and Rebecca Hollaway. John Devane's brother, James, was born August 1, 1757 and in 1839 he was living in New Hanover County, North Carolina, and stated that he was commissioned captain in 1780. Reference was also made to another brother, William. The widow's brother, Francis Davis, was living in Bladen County, North Carolina in 1840, aged eighty-four years. One William S. Devane was living in Clinton, North Carolina, in 1856 but his relation to the soldier was not given.
