V. Wood, Esq., came among us from Wilmington, N. C., as cashier and book-keeper for John D. Sprunt, then engaged in a moderate way in the naval store business as an experiment. During the time so engaged with Mr. Sprunt—who, by the way, is one of nature’s noblemen—Mr. Wood, by his quiet courtesy and strict attention to business, made many friends. When Mr. Sprunt was called away to London he transferred his business here to Mr. Wood, who continued the same.—Last spring he removed his yard to the foot of J street and the surrounding lots, up town, where more room was to be had than in the surrounding lots, where he has put up wharves, buildings and tramways suitable for his business, and is now actively engaged in shipping spirits and rosin, having a stock now of $75,000 in value on the yard. Most of this stock goes abroad in foreign bottoms. The yard is a busy scene, with samplers and laborers, and vessels at the wharves receiving cargo. We are gratified to observe the great increase in the business of Mr. Wood, who has made his way, by strict probity and attention to his affairs, and is known as perfectly reliable by parties he deals with, both here and abroad. The old “North State” may send us as much much more of this kind of “Timber” as she can spare, and Brunswick will be the gainer. Additional Comments: Alfred Vincent Wood was the brother of Dr. Thomas Fanning Wood, of Wilmington, NC. According to one record, he was born October 3, 1853 in Wilmington, NC and died the 12th of April, 1926 in Glynn County, GA. According to the 1900 Census, Glynn County, Brunswick, GA, his wife's name was Marion. There are photos listed for both Alfred Wood and Marion Colesberry in the Wood Family Papers - Family Photo Album (UNC-W). http://library.uncw.edu/web/collections/manuscript/MS172_010012.html John Dalziel Sprunt was the son of Alexander Sprunt and a younger brother of Margaret Tannahill, James D. and Mary Kennedy Sprunt. Mary Kennedy Sprunt married Dr. T. F. Wood. Although not mentioned in this newspaper article, Jesse Wilder, almost 20 years the senior of A. V. Wood, came to Brunswick, GA, from Wilmington, NC, and built a turpentine distillery in early 1880. "Turpentine and Its Products," a reprint from the Wilmington Review of October 22, 1880 appeared in the Brunswick Advertiser Vol.6, No. 18 November 6, 1880. In the article, Dr. T. F. Wood is listed as a resource. http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/newhanover/newspapers/turpenti55gnw.txt File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/newhanover/newspapers/avwoodsn24nnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/ncfiles/ File size: 3.2 Kb
