L. Morton, as commander of the naval reserve brigade of this state and that the resignation had been accepted. The reason given by Commander Morton for his resignation was pressure of private business. Additional Comments: As an officer in the Wilmington Light Infantry, Captain George Lee Morton was involved in "keeping the peace" on the day of the 1898 Wilmington Riot. Several pictures of himself, his men and even his house on the day of the riot are available online. An active business man, and running for political office in March of 1910, he excused himself from the race and moved his family to Atlanta, GA having received a promotion with the Galena Oil Company.
