June 26, 1804, Wilmington Gazette June 26, 1804 Pearce Replies to Rogers’ Accusations MR. HALL, In your paper of the 20th ult. I read an advertisement signed by JAMES ROGERS, highly injurious to my reputation. For the information of persons who may not be acquainted with said ROGERS, you will pleased insert the underwritten: I HAD JAMES ROGER’S Bond for $100 and on the 17th of March, 1804, I settled with him, and there remained due to me $80 on the bond and $7 for a saddle he had of me; for which $87 I took his note. He asserts there was never any dealing between us except the saddle -- the contrary of which I shall prove by unquestionable testimony. The notoriety of ROGERS’ character will operate on the mind of every unprejudiced person in my favor. As what I have asserted will be proved in Court, a farther refutation of his assertions in unnecessary, those who are acquainted with him will pay no respect to what he had advanced.
