The note was written by myself, and he called his little son, WESLY PEARCE, to witness the same. I have been credibly informed that he has offered a note for sale of the amount of eighty-seven dollars, ($87) against me. I went to him the 3rd of May, took sufficient witness and tendered the amount of the note I gave him for seven dollars: he swore he would not satisfy either of us so far as to show the note, for he had sold it. I asked him who he let have it, but he could not tell. I, therefore, forewarn any person from purchasing any note of hand against me more than seven dollars, as there never was any other contract between us under any expectation of recovering it from me. The above mentioned gentleman (if I may take the liberty to style him such) has not been worth $87 in any kind of property at one time which he dares call his own, for five years, as is evidently known by all who are acquainted with him; and if he can produce a note against me of that amount, he has erased the cross strokes which I put across the mark thus ($) and turned the tails of the S together, if it is the note I gave. It could not be done any other way; and it is the general opinion of his acquaintance, that, were it not for the laws of this country, he would not hesitate to do anything whereby he would reap an advantage, even to commit forgery, which I think he has done, as appears by circumstances, as to all intents and purposes. If I have stated anything in the above, but the facts, let MR. PEARCE say to the contrary.
