J. Z. EDWARDS We regret to announce that Mr. James Z. Edwards died last Friday in Washington Territory. He was a native of this city, the son of Jacob Edwards, formerly of the firm of Edwards & Hall. Two years ago he and his brother Frank went to Southern California for his health. He was on a visit to friends in Washington when he died. He was bookkeeper for a W. E. Springer & Co. for a term, and was an excellent young man. We suppose he was about 23 years of age. Additional Comments: James Zwinglius Edwards was born c.1866 to Jacob J. Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth Pearsall Sheffield, originally of Duplin County, NC. Jacob J. Edwards was the senior partner of the firm of Edwards & Hall in Wilmington, NC. Benjamin Franklin Hall was the junior partner of the company. About 1874, Jacob moved his family to the Tar Landing community of Onslow County to oversee a “satellite” operation of the business. Shortly after returning to Onslow County, from the World Exposition in Philadelphia, PA, Jacob, died of typhoid fever, in May of 1876. After the dissolution of the business, B. Frank Hall provided the widow Edwards and her five minor children with $30,000, her husband’s share in the firm. This provided his mother and four siblings, with enough money to purchase a small but comfortable home in Kenansville, NC. However, Elizabeth P. Edwards was sickly, and died of “consumption” (tuberculosis) about 1878. His oldest sister, Martha C. “Katie” Edwards, died of consumption about 1882. It was at this time that a suggestion was made to B. Frank Hall that the children should move to California for their health. B. F. Hall sent both James Z. and his brother Frank Hall Edwards to the Riverside, CA area to work in the orange groves. Later, the two youngest children would also relocate to California, Jacob Ella “Jakie”, and James Conway Hiden Edwards.
