Morton will deeply sympathize with him in the loss of his mother, Mrs. Mary C. Morton, whose death occurred at the residence, 720 North Fourth street, this morning at eleven o’clock. Mrs. Morton had been very ill for some weeks past and her death while not unexpected nevertheless comes as a crushing blow to the son who has watched tenderly at her bedside during her illness. The immediate cause of death was paralysis. Mrs. Morton has been confined to her home for the past seven years and was an invalid for the greater part of the time. Mrs. Morton was the widow of the late Stephen H. Morton, who preceded her to the grave some years ago. Her maiden name was Mary C. Wilder and she leaves to mourn their great loss, one son, Col. Geo. L. Morton, a brother, Mr. Jesse Wilder, of this city, and a little granddaughter, Miss Eliza Morton, twelve years of age. Mrs. Morton was a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The funeral services will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 5 o’clock, and in the absence of her pastor, Rev. A. D. McClure, who is absent from the city, will be conducted by Rev. J. S. Crowley, pastor of Immanuel Presbyterian Church. The interment will be made in Bellevue cemetery. Additional Comments: Mary Caroline Wilder was the daughter of Abram Wilder and Eliza Parker. She was born c.1841 in Onslow County, NC. Her brother, Jesse Wilder, was also born in Onslow County. She married John T. Whitehurst, of Onslow County, on 13 May 1861 at her father’s home in Wilmington. John T. Whitehurst died in December of 1863 at Stones Bay in Onslow County, NC. Stephen Henderson Morton, the son of West Morton and Rachel Henderson, of Onslow County, had married Sarah W. Cooper in 1856. She had died c.1859. During the Civil War, S. H. Morton served in the 3rd NC Cavalry attaining the rank of Lieutenant. Her brother, Jesse, was also a Lieutenant but served in the 4th NC Cavalry. After the War, Stephen H. Morton returned to Onslow County and married the widow, Mary Carrie Whitehurst on 25 March 1866. George Lee Morton, their son, was born 10 December of that same year. In 1871, S. H. Morton moved, with his wife and son, to Wilmington, NC and joined his brother-in-law, Jesse Wilder, in Jesse’s already successful business, trading in turpentine and naval stores. Her father, Abram Wilder, died on 15 December 1884 and is buried in Bellevue Cemetery, Wilmington, NC. On 31 May 1886, Stephen H. Morton died of hemorrhagic fever. He too is buried in Bellevue Cemetery. A large marker stands in the midst of the various Wilder and Morton family member markers. It lists the birth and death dates for both Abram Wilder and Stephen H. Morton. Her son, George Lee, married Eliza Ward, of Onslow County, on 25th March 1891. Two granddaughters were born, but the eldest, Carrie Ward Morton, died in April of 1899. Her daughter-in-law, Eliza, died shortly after the birth of her second child in 1893. Geo. L.
