MORTON BORN FEB. 8, 1833 DIED MAY 31, 1886 This is the inscription, for Stephen H. Morton, upon the Morton obelisk. He was born near Swansboro, NC (Onslow County), the son of West Morton and Rachel Henderson. He was the 8th of 14 children. His first wife died a few years before the Civil War. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd NC Cavalry during the War. He married M. Caroline Wilder shortly after the war and their son, George Lee Morton, was born in 1866 in Onslow County. S.H. moved his family to the Wilmington, NC area about 1871. He joined his brother-in-law, Jesse, in the turpentine distilling business. The company later became the "Morton and Hall Company". In early May of 1866, he became ill and after three weeks died of hemorragic fever. Additional Comments: I believe the "Hall" in the Morton and Hall Company was Benjamin Franklin Hall, who's signature appears as a witness on the Stephen H. Morton Will of 22nd May, 1886. The Will can be found in the N.C. State Archives in Raleigh.
