Russell, Sr. memorial. The inscription reads, " DANIEL L. RUSSELL Sr. BORN OCT. 11, 1803 DIED JULY 31, 1871 _ Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace. Thy will be done." Additional Comments: Daniel L. Russell, Sr. was the son of Thomas Russell & Obiah Ward (of Onslow County). He came to the Brunswick, NC area in the early 1820s and made his fortune in naval stores (turpentine distilling, etc.). His plantation was called Winnabow. At the time of the 1860 Census, he was living in the Town Creek section of Brunswick County and his "real value" was listed at $32.5K while his "personal value" was $211K. His first wife, Caroline Elizabeth Sanders, died a few months after the birth of their first child, Daniel Lindsay, Jr. He remarried a few years later to Olivia Grist, of Washington, NC and they had three children: Thomas B., Mary Williams, and David S. Russell. Mary Williams Russell married William James Harriss Bellamy of Wilmington, NC. His father-in-law, David Ward Sanders (of Onslow County) was also a wealthy plantation owner (Palo Alto). After the death of D.W. Sanders' last child in 1851, Russell, Sr. brought his first son, Dan, Jr. to stay with D.W. Sanders, saying, “Here he is, David.
