Northampton County, NC - Cemeteries File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Bill Megginson Nelson Family (New) Cemetery (7/4/2001) The Cemetery is located on the property of Wheeler, it is located on the right hand side of the road headed to Conway from Murfreesboro, NC just past Ashley Grove Rd. There is a road after Ashley Grove Rd. On the right hand side of the road that bares off to the right that goes to Pennelton, NC, you go past that road just about 1/4 of a mile and you will see a small cemetery on the right which is the Vann Family Cemetery and right beside it you will see a trailer which belongs to the Wheeler's and if you look to the left of the trailer you will see another cemetery with some headstones back in the field, this is the Nelson Family Cemetery and it is known as the New Nelson Cemetery to the Nelson Family because there is an Old Nelson Cemetery on Laurie Vann Rd. in Conway also. The surnames in this cemetery are Futrell, King, Martin, Moore, Nelson, Odom and Vann. The Graves are as follows: Norfleet Franklin Futrell, Born Jan. 8, 1917 and Died May 23, 1997 Viola F. King (Daughter of A.D. & Amanda King) Born Nov. 17, 1878 and Died Apr. 21, 1928 Paul Copeland Martin, Born Mar. 1, 1883 and Died Aug. 12, 1969 Nonna Mary Martin, Born Sept. 30, 1882 and Died Dec. 22, 1958 John W. Martin, Born Mar. 26, 1874 and Died June 4, 1919 2 unmarked graves, (no writing or markings visible) Hattie M. Martin, Born Sept. 23, 1870 and Died June 23, 1882 Robert Wayne Moore, Sept. 14, 1940 (this is all it says, I was told by Jesse and Ella Mae Nelson that this was a traveling salesman who died while traveling and the Nelson's buried him here.) Martha Virginia Nelson, Born Mar. 4, 1912 and Died Jun. 4, 1922 Then there is 3 unmarked graves that looks like the 1st one could be a child, and the other 2 look like Infant graves and they are between Martha and John C Nelson's graves. John C. Nelson, Born Mar. 8, 1880 and Died Jun. 6, 1937 Sallie 0.(Odom) Nelson, Born May, 10 1889 and Died Apr. 18, 1963 Martha Cornelia Odom (wife of N. J. Odom), Born Oct. 17, 1850 and Died Mar. 5, 1932 N.(Noah) J. Odom, Born Nov. 5, 1850 and Died Aug. 22, 1892 Charlie T. Vann, Born Sept. 20, 1857 and Died Jan. 7, 1941 Fannie Odom Vann, Born Apr. 24, 1884 and Died Apr. 8, 1965 Noah J. Vann, Born Mar. 20, 1907 and Died July 14, 1927 Elizabeth Ann Vann (Daughter of Johnnie and Sarah Vann), Born Oct. 14, 1936 and Died May 24, 1938 These are all the graves in this cemetery and the cemetery is still owned by the Nelson Family. I was told by all of the living Nelson's at their family reunion in June of 2001, that when the property was sold to the Wheeler's that there was an acre more or less that was excluded from the sale of the property so that the cemetery would remain in the Nelson family. This graveyard was researched and logged by Gwen Jenkins and Bill Megginson, both of Portsmouth, VA on June 30, 2001.
