Byrd Oath to be Taken for Qualification of Public Officers I do solemnly and sincerely swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Independent State of North Carolina and to the powers of authorities which are or may be established for the Government thereof, not inconsistent with the Constitution and I will do my utmost endeavor to disclose and make known to the Legislative or Executive powers of the said State all treasons and traitorous consfuracies (note: obsolete- conspiracies) which I shall know to be made or intended against the said State, and I do faithfully promise that I will endeavor to support maintain and defend the independence of the said State against all persons and powers whatsoever and all those things I do plainly swear according to those express words by me spoken and according to the plain and common sense and signification of the same words heartily, willingly and truly and without any equivocation, mental aversion, or secret reservations whatsoever.
