MATTIE BRYANT ALLEN

   NEWSOMS – A funeral service for Mrs. Mattie Bryant Allen was conducted 
Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in McDowell Funeral Home, Boykins, b y the Rev. Ben B. 
Ussery of Boykins Baptist Church. Burial was in Severn, N.C. Cemetery.

   Pallbearers were Clinton Grizzard, Ellis Bryant, Grady Flythe, Cleophas 
Spence Jr., David Allen and Ralph Daniels.

   Mrs. Allen, 71, died Tuesday in Portsmouth nursing home after a long 
illness.

   A native of Northampton County, N.C. , she was the widow of Lonnie Allen 
and a daughter of Johnny and Mrs. Martha Jones Bryant.

   She formerly lived in Suffolk.

   Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Spence of Branchville, Mrs. 
Decie Gary of Newsoms, and Mrs. Inez Gay and Mrs. Frances Winslow of Suffolk; 
five sons, John E. Allen of Boykins, Horace Allen of Williamsburg, Carroll 
Allen of Suffolk, Bernard Allwn of Newsoms and Edward Allen of Portsmouth; a 
brother, Johnny L. Bryant of Pendelton, N.C., a sister, Mrs. Emma Butler of 
Seaboard, N.C.; 25 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
