Atkinson, 78, formerly of Richmond, VA, died Thursday, December 4, 2008, following a brief illness. Mr. Atkinson was a retired administrator with the Virginia Department of Corrections and was an Army veteran who served in the Korean War. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Washington and Henry No. 344 Masonic Lodge in Mechanicsville, VA. He was a faithful member of United Methodist Church in Severn, NC, a member of the Virginia/Carolina Car Club, a former member of the Severn-Pendleton Ruritan Club, and an active community member. Mr. Atkinson is survived by his wife, Margaret J. Atkinson of Severn; one brother, C. Freeman Atkinson Jr. and wife, Arline, of Mechanicsville, VA; one daughter, Teresa Atkinson and her husband, Bill Porch, and their child, Carlee Porch, of Montpelier, VA; one son, Doug Atkinson and his wife, Dawn, and their children, Danielle, Dustin and Deanna, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three stepsons, Kenneth Odom and his wife, Missy, and their children, Susanna and Kenny; Richard Odom and his wife, EB, and their children, Carter and Emma; and Jason Odom. He was predeceased by his parents, Claude Freeman Atkinson and Annie Reese Odom Atkinson; his first wife, Josephine L. Munyon Atkinson, and his brother, Wiley Atkinson. The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home in Boykins, VA from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Severn on Sunday, Dec. 7 and a graveside service will be held at Signal Hill Memorial Park in Hanover, VA at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, Severn, NC.
