I, P. 5 RUSSELL JAMES BARKLEY The body of Russell James Barkley, 60, reported missing from his home in the Boykins community since April 9, was recovered from the Meherrin River on Thursday, April 18. Barkley, a farmer whose home in North Carolina was a short distance from the Meherrin River and the Virginia State line, was a lifelong resident of Northampton County. His parents were the late William J. and Mrs. Lottie Taylor Barkley. The husband of Mrs. Virgie Worrell Barkley, he was a member of the Severn, N.C. Baptist Church and a charter member of the Severn Ruritan Club. He served in the Navy during World War I. Surviving besides his wife and a son, J.W. Barkley of Boykins and six sisters, Mrs. J.B. Randolph of St. Brides, Norfolk County, Mrs. E.C. Huff of Henderson, N.C., Mrs. Otis Ricks of Conway, N.C., and Mrs. R.F. Watson, Mrs. E.E. DeLoatch and Mrs. R.H. David, all of Severn, N.C. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Severn Baptist Church by the pastor, Rev. J.C. Ray. Burial was in the Severn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Garland Barnes, Mallory Britt, Carl Fleetwood, Joseph Gay, Joseph Grant, Ardell Long, A.B. Stephenson, J.C. Stephenson, Jr., and George R. Stephenson.
