I, P. 1 JAMES GILLIS BARNES BOYKINS BALL PLAYRER DIES OF INJURIES FORM AUTO ACCIDENT A member of the Boykins baseball team died Monday morning at the Roanoke- Chowan Hospital as a result of injuries received in a car accident on the Meherrin River bridge near Boykins. Funeral services for Airman 1/c James Gillis Barnes, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Barnes of Northampton County, N.C., will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon at the Severn, N.C., Baptist Church at 3 o’clock, by Rev. J.C. Ray, pastor, assisted by Rev. Randolph Phillips of Pendleton, N.C. Interment will be in the Severn Cemetery with full military honors and the active pallbearers are members of the Boykins baseball team. Honorary pallbearers will be friends of the family. Airman Barnes, who was home on leave between enlistments, was critically injured early Monday morning when the car he was driving failed to make the curve leading to the bridge, turned over three or four times, throwing Barnes about 99 feet ahead, before plunging into the middle of the river. The car struck the guard rails on the left side of the bridge, taking out a large section. Barnes was a member of the Boykins baseball team and had seen considerable action as a pitcher. The deceased is survived by five brothers, Roy Wayne Barnes of Roanoke Rapids, Thomas Britton Barnes of Boykins, and Charlie Clyde, Jr., Robert Earle and Henry Hodge Barnes, all of Severn; and one sister, Miss Maude Barnes of Franklin. In connection with the accident, North Carolina authorities asked Deputy Ryland Brooks to pick up Reuben Vick of near Capron on a felony warrant charging failure to lend aid at the scene of an accident. Vick waived extradiction and is presently out on bail.
