CAPTAIN GEORGE H. BARNES
   A CAROLINIAN GONE. 
  About midnight last night Captain George H. Barnes [sic*] died at his 
rooms at the Atlantic Hotel, after a long illness, in the 54th year of his 
age.  Deceased was a native of Murfreesboro, N. C., [sic*] and started in 
the cotton business here just after the war, making a fortune.  During the 
war he served as captain in the Confederate army.

Elmwood Cemetery*, Norfolk

Collen W. Barnes signed a m.bond 13 Jun 1815 with Jonas Edmunds, but there 
is "no consent, no girls name on bond." 
Collen W. Barnes of NC also appears 18 Jan 1830 as guardian of Rebecca E. 
Williamson, dt/o Richard Williamson, decd. 
(Southampton Co. M.Reg. 1750-1853, pp. 238, 406) 
 
Collin W. Barnes appears in the [2 Oct] 1850 Census, a farmer, age 67, b. 
VA, with [wife] Louisa, 55, b. VA, [sons] Joseph B., 13, & George B., 11, 
both b. NC, and 5 boarders: teacher Benjamin S. Bronson, 22, b. ME, student 
John W. Harrell, 18, & 3 others boys, 11-15, all b. VA.

Barnes, George B., b. 1839, d. 27 Dec 1893, tombstone location 8AE-L32-S8 a 
linked image also shows a shield-shaped metal marker reading "CONFEDERATE 
STATES OF AMERICA"; a lower cross-bar shows George B. Barnes, but the dates 
on the next line are illegible in the image.

George B. Barnes, Norfolk cotton merchant, b. 30 Aug 1839, Northampton Co., 
NC, applied to the London legation for a passport 26 Jun 1889 for the 
purpose of travelling on the Continent, having left the US 25 May 1889, and 
intending to return there in a few months.  He was described as follows: age 
49, 5'7½" (Eng.), medium forehead, hazel eyes, regular nose, mouth- 
mustache, round chin, light hair, fair complexion, oval face.
