I, P. 5 ELBERT E. BATEMAN Elbert E. Bateman, 68, husband of Mrs. Edna Buffkin Bateman, died unexpectedly Friday morning, October 18, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.D. Vick, Jr., of Branchville. Mr. and Mrs. Bateman moved to Branchville from Newport News just a few weeks ago and had planned to build a new home in West Branchville. He was a retired building contractor. A native of Plymouth, N.C., Mr. Bateman was the son of the late James H. and Mrs. Virginia Poole Bateman. He was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church, Woodville, N.C. In addition to his wife and daughter, Mrs. Vick, he is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Donald F. Hudgins of Richmond; three sons, Robert H. Bateman of Smithfield, Elbert Bateman of Memphis, Tenn., and Herbert Bateman of Newport News; one sister, Mrs. S.D. Jennings of Elizabeth City, N.C.; ten grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the Branchville Baptist Church with Rev. Thomas H. Caulkins, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. David F. White, Sr., pastor of Monument Heights Baptist Church, Richmond. Burial was at 4 p.m. in Peninsula Memorial Cemetery, Warwick. Pallbearers were Kenneth Bateman, Samuel Jennings, Jesse Jennings, Edward Phelps, Linton Grizzard, B.C. Edwards, Eugene Buffkin and Donald Buffkin.
