The obituary of James Henry Copeland from the 14 June 1900 edition of the Roanoke- Chowan Times: "James Henry Copeland On the evening of May 26, 1900, as the sun was slowly sinking behind the western hills the death angel visited the happy home of Mr. and James Henry Copeland near Woodland and claimed for its own the dearly beloved husband and head of the family. Mr. Copeland was a kind and loving husband, a good and obliging neighbor, and specially kind and considerate of his four step-children and those in his employ. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Copeland, his father still living, and was 35 years old at his death, having been born June 17, 1865. He made a public profession of religion about five years ago and joined the M. E. church at Pinners and lived a consistent member until his death. In his short illness he did not forget to pray and say, "Praise the Lord." He told those around him that he was going home to rest, his last words were, "Praise the Lord, oh my soul." His pastor, Rev. W. F. Jones, preached his funeral sermon from the text, "If a man die, shall he live again?" found in Job, 14-14.
