Although she had been in ill health since September, her death came as a shock to her many friends. Apparently better, she was sitting up when death suddenly claimed her. Esther Cotton Wood was born November 6, 1875, at the old Wood homestead in Northampton County, N.C., a daughter of the late Capt. Spier Whitaker Wood and Mrs. Frances Bailey Gary Wood. She inherited the beauty, grace and charm of her ancestress, Esther Cotton Moore, a famous belle of Revolutionary times for whom she was named. In early life she married Ernest DeLoatche of Northampton County, who preceded her to the grave seven years ago. To this union was born a daughter, Ernestine Joy DeLoatche, who survives her. She is survived also by three sisters, Mrs. Sallie Wood Edwards and Mrs. Adna W. Barrett of Boykins and Mrs. Henry Reichling of Lynnhaven; one brother, M.R. Wood of Miami, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. DeLoatche was a loyal member of the Boykins Baptist Church and of the Ladies’ Bible Class. She also taught a Sunday school class for several years. She was a pious, Christian gentlewoman, possessing traits of character seldom found today. She was quiet, modest and unassuming in her manner, and to know her was to love her. She was fond of young people and had a keen sense of humor. The love and esteem for this good woman was expressed in the many deeds of kindness and the many floral tributes. The funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. Nathanael Habel, assisted by Rev. W.L. Sturtevant, pastor of the Boykins Methodist Church, at the residence in Boykins on Saturday afternoon at three o’clock. Two of her favorite hymns, “Abide With Me” and “In The Sweet Bye and Bye,” were sung by the combined choirs of the Baptist and Methodist churches, accomplished by Mrs. Earl W. Bryant. As the casket, covered with a blanket of pink and white carnations, was borne from the home, Mrs. Bryant played softly “No Night There” and “Beautiful Valley Of Eden.” Interment was in the family plot in the Severn, N.C. cemetery; the active pallbearers being M.B. Drewry, W.J. Edwards, Mary Wood Edwards, W.J. Edwards, Jr., Woodrow W. White and L.B. Maddrey. Honorary pallbearers were members of her Sunday school class.
