He was born May 7, 1883, the son of the late John F. Edwards and Adelia Raper Edwards of Northampton County, N.C. For many years he was a member of the Persons Methodist Church, in which he was an active worker until ill health prevented. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Eunice Evelyn Grizzard Edward of the Drewryville community; seven daughters, Miss Shirley Mae Edwards of Drewryville and Miss Lois M. Edwards of Lawrenceville, Mrs. John Grizzard of Richmond, Mrs. Quinton Dunlow of Lynnhaven, Mrs. Frank Griffin of Boykins, Mrs. Earl Cooke of Portsmouth, and Mrs. Ralph Dunlow of Courtland; nine sons, Gilbert Thomas Edwards, Stuart Jackson Edwards and Wallace Grizzard Edwards of Drewryville, Lloyd Naff Edwards, William Edwards and Lennie T. Edwards of Emporia, Charlie L. Edwards and Joseph Edwards of Richmond and Pfc. James Edwards of Fort Bragg, N.C.; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Other survivors are one sister, Mrs. Essie E. Grizzard of Drewryville; five brothers, a twin, Floyd Edwards, and Roy T. Edwards of Drewryville, William Edwards and Val M. Edwards of Emporia, and L.B. Edwards of Richmond. There are also two half-brothers, R.L. Edwards and Thornton Edwards of Richmond, one half-sister, Mrs. Ashby Cook of Richmond, and his step-mother, Mrs. John F. Edwards of Richmond. Funeral services for Mr. Edwards were conducted from Persons Church on Friday afternoon at three o’clock, with Rev. W.L. Sturtevant officiating, assisted by Rev. H.B. Jennings of Drewryville. Music was furnished by the combined choirs of Persons and Hebron churches, accompanied by Mrs. Allen Harris. The large attendance at the funeral and the lovely floral designs attested to the high esteem in which Mr. Edwards was held in his community. Interment was in the cemetery at Persons Church, the active pallbearers being Dudley Edwards, Raymond Edwards, Bob Edwards, Horace Edwards, Andrew Edwards, William Grizzard, Cleveland Grizzard and Wesley Grizzard.
