Jenkins, white flagman at the Seaboard’s Main Street crossing here, was most seriously injured Thursday morning by a cowardly hit and run driver, and is now in Raiford Memorial Hospital in a critical condition although it is considered somewhat more hopeful than when he was first admitted to the hospital, he having received five blood transfusions yesterday. Yesterday morning about 7 o’clock, Mr. Jenkins was flagging the crossing against the approaching through freight No. 82, en route to Portsmouth. Flagging an approaching car, the driver of the automobile not only failed to stop by his Mr. Jenkins and thru him against and under the train, darting across the track in front of the engine and getting away. Mr. Jenkins sustained a compound fracture of the left leg, fracture of the right hip, and a serious skull fracture. The driver of the car and its license number are unknown. Mr. Jenkins, whose home is in Littleton, N.C., has been flagman here for several years. Mr. Jenkins died this morning at about 11 o’clock.
