Libby was born on November 23, 1919 in Conway, NC to Thomas and Betty Burgess. She was raised on a farm, and had five siblings (Jeanette, Betty Ann, Colin, Elizabeth, and Joe), of which she was the last remaining. She graduated from Conway High School in 1936. She married Leslie H. Jernigan in 1942, and they were happily married for over 50 years at the time of his death in 1993. Her son-in-law, C.W. Britton, Sr, also preceded her in death. Libby instilled a love of God to her family. She was the oldest member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where she was a past Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir, and was active in the Ruth Kersey Circle. Libby was a dedicated employee of Roses for more than 55 years, and also worked at Maxway and Dollar General. She enjoyed working until she was 95. She was a silent trendsetter wearing pantsuits, and working outside of the home with small children before it was commonplace. She loved front porch sitting, drinking Mt. Dew, cooking (especially fried chicken, biscuits, applesauce cake, and cornbread), and spending time with her precious family. Everyone who knew her, loved her, and she was always ready with a smile or a hug. Her favorite saying was, “Be particular.” She is survived by her daughter Vivian J. Britton, and friend William Arrington of Windsor, and her son, Joseph E. Jernigan, and his wife, Jane of Ivor. She is also survived by her grandchildren, C.W. Britton, Jr., and his wife Kim, their children Adam and Amanda Cooke and their grandchildren Hudson Cook and Brayden Tripp of Waverly, OH; Mary Leigh Britton of Windsor; Dr. Amy Jernigan Riggs, her husband, Glenn, and their son, Jacob, of Franklin; Bryan J. Jernigan, his wife Lauren, and their son, Eric, of Naperville, IL; Christopher R. Jernigan, and his wife Leanna of Aulander, NC, and an adopted grandson, Richard Donovan. She is also survived by her former daughter in law and special caregiver, Teresa Jernigan. Libby will be missed by her many nieces, nephews, friends, and especially her cats. A special thanks to Scott and Kelly Fisher for caring for her at her beloved home for several months. A funeral will be conducted at 4 o’clock Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Rev. Glen Riggs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church or other times at the residence on Walters Hwy. The family suggests donations in her memory be made to Beaver Dam Baptist Church or Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter. Wright Funeral Home is serving the family. Well done, Good and Faithful servant.
