Mr. Lewis was born in Jackson, Northampton County, N.C., was educated at Graham’s School in Warrenton, Homer’s School in Oxford, and was graduated from the University of North Carolina and the Law School of the University of Virginia. While at the last named place he won the Jefferson Medal for oratory. He was a member of the Raven Society and of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and was a vestryman in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Suffolk, in which city he was a practicing attorney for many years. Surviving him are his widow, the former Sue Dabney Billing; one step-son, Stuart Bolling, and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert Carter Randolph; and two brothers, John Joseph Long of Norfolk and Edmund Wilkins Lewis of Jackson, N.C. He had many relatives in Southampton County, being on his mother’s side a grandson of the late Robert Ridley of “Rock Spring.” Funeral services were conducted in Suffolk on Monday afternoon by Rev. E. Ruffin Jones of Norfolk, and the deceased was laid to rest in the Wilkins family graveyard on his beautiful estate “Woodlands,” in Brunswick County. A large concourse of friends and relatives attended both the funeral and the interment.
