NOTTOWAY CLAIMS YOUNG GIRL’S BODY FRIDAY AFTERNOON

   Ten-year old Anne Rita Lewter of George, N.C., was drowned last Friday 
afternoon around 3:00 o’clock while wading or swimming in the Nottoway River 
near Handsom at a place just back of the old Hand farm. The young girl was 
accompanied by Blanche Baugham of Newsoms and Joe Johnson of Handsom. All of 
the children had on their bathing suits.

   Anne got beyond her depth and went under in about ten feet of water, the 
other two children narrowly escaping a similar fate. Young Raleigh Story, who 
was on the bank, ran to Handsom for help, one of those responding being County 
Health Officer Dr. H.D. Crow, who was conducting a typhoid clinic at the time.

   The body of the drowned girl was recovered after about an hour’s effort and 
attempts to induce artificial respiration were kept up for another hour 
without success. Dr. Crow brought the body to the Holland Funeral Home here, 
from whence it was later removed to t he Holland Home at Murfreesboro, N.C.

   Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock from Conway Baptist 
Church by the pastor, the Rev. Lonnie Sasser. The child’s Sunday school 
classmates acted as flower bearers, the casket being covered with a spray of 
white snapdragons, pink asters and ferns. Eight boys from Conway of about her 
age were the pallbearers. Interment was made in the family plot near Conway.

   The child is survived by her parents, Royal Clayton and Clarine Maddrey 
Lewter and by two small brothers, Romie Vernon and William Maddrey Lewter. She 
was visiting relatives at Handsom when the tragedy occurred.
