A native of Pendleton, NC, she was a daughter of the late Jesse N. Horne and Johnnie Pruden Horne and was predeceased by an infant son, two sisters, Jessie Mae Horne and Margaret H. Lane and two nephews Jeffrey and David Lane. Mrs. Porter was a graduate of Chowan College and attended East Carolina Teachers College (ECU). She was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and a former member of Roberts Chapel Baptist Church in Pendleton, NC. The brightest joys of her life were her family and church family. She was a loving mother, wife and Nana whom will be dearly missed. Her kind spirit and warm heart will always be remembered. Left to cherish her memory is a daughter, Gayle Porter Lowdermilk (Dean) of Courtland, a son, Stephen L. Porter (Gail) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, a brother, Joe Alex Horne (Joan) of Pendleton, NC, three grandchildren, Walter Daniel Lowdermilk and Christopher (Abby) and Pamela King, one great-grandchild, Natalie King, one nephew Phillip Horne and two nieces, Charlotte Bohn and Nancy P. Jenkins. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, September 5, 2014 at Newsoms United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darwin Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Thursday at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin and suggests memorial donations be made to Newsoms United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 297. Newsoms, VA 23874.
