Willis Williams Stephenson Sr., 72, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at his home in Virginia Beach. Willis was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Severn, N.C., to the late George Robert Stephenson and Lillie Pruden Stephenson. Willis grew up in Severn, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and upon returning home entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his B.S. in Accounting in 1951. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi fraternity and was also a graduate of The Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. Willis was a senior vice president at Virginia National Bank, now Bank of America, and president and chairman of the Board of Atlantic Permanent Savings & Loan Association. Willis served as president of the United Community Fund, director of Norfolk Community Hospital, and in many other volunteer positions in the community. As a former member of Oaklette Methodist Church he served as trustee, Lay Leader and Sunday School teacher. For the past 24 years, he was a member of Kings Grant Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Willis was predeceased by his daughter, Betty Anne. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty Bailey Stephenson; his son, Willis W. Stephenson Jr. of Beaverdam, Va. and his wife, Myla and their sons, Bradley, Caleb and Paul; his daughter, Janet K. Stephenson of Lynchburg; his daughter, Kimberly Stephenson Shuler of Virginia Beach and husband, Patrick; and his grandchildren, Jeffrey, Katherine and Molly Stephenson of Virginia Beach. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. W. Jerry Holcomb at 11 a.m. Thursday at Kings Grant Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Newsoms, Va., at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kings Grant Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Betty Anne Stephenson Lend-a-Hand Fund at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
