Maarbjerg In the name of God Amen I Sarah Cotten being Very Sick but thanks being to almighty God of good Disposing Sense and Memory Calling to mind the uncertainty of this Transitory am willing & make my will and Dispose of my Estate as followeth. First I bequeath my Soul to almighty God that gave it me and my body to be buried at the Discretion of my Executor. Item. I give and bequeath to my Son William Bridgers my Negro fellow Called Jack in the Manner following Viz he be Valued by Two free holders agreed upon for that purpose and the money arising from that Valuation to be Equally Divided between him & William Bridgers, Joseph Bridgers, John Bridgers, Sarah Cotten the wife of John Cotten and Patience Cotten the wife of Thomas Cotten. Also I give and bequeath my sons William Bridgers, Joseph Bridgers and John Bridgers and my daughters Sarah Cotten and Patience Cotten Twelve pence Each. Item. I give & bequeath to my Daughters Prissilla Wills, Mary Cotten and Martha Scott Twenty shilling Virginia Currency each. Further my will and desire is that my Negroe wench Called Denice and my Negroe child Called Daniel and the child said wench is with be sold at publick Venue and of money arising by said sale applied to pay my just Debts and if surplus is there it be Equally Divided between my sons Charles Cotten, William Cotten, and Robert Cotten. Item. I give & bequeath to my son Charles Cotten one feather bed & furniture which always lies upstairs and my young horse called Jolly and my yoke of steers. Item. I give and bequeath to my son William Cotten one feather bed & furniture which I Commonly lie upon. Item. I give and bequeath to my son Robert Cotten one feather bed and furniture called the Low bed in the little room also one Desk and my Negroe girl called Vilet and her increase to him and his heirs forever. Further it is my Will and Desire that all the rest of my Estate be Equally Divided between my sons Charles Cotten, Wm Cotten and Rob't Cotten Except the old Chairs to my son Charles. Also I do nominate and appoint my son William Bridgers my sole Executor of this my last will and this I say to be my last will and Testament revoking and Disalowing all other will by me made in Witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and fixed my seal this seventh day of December one Thousand Seven hundred and fifty three. Wills John Scott Codicil: Whereas I Sarah Cotton of Northampton County have made my Last Will & Testament bearing date of the Seventh day of December 1753 and am Willing if the same shalle stand good with the addition of this Small Schedule or Codicil to my said Will. That is to say: I give to my son Joseph Bridgers Two Cows and Calves and one three year old Steer and further my will and desire is that my son Charles may live upon the Plantation and take into his possesion and care such things as belong to him but not to make any bargains of Consequence without the consent of William Bridgers my Executor. In will hereof I have hereunto Set my hand and fixed my Seal this Thirteenth day of December 1753. Sarah Cotten (her mark) Witness: John Dawson John Scott N. Hampton County February Court 1754 The within written Will with the Codicil annexed was exhibited into Court and proved by the Oath of John Dawson and Richard Wills two of the subscribing witnesses thereto; and at the same tiem William Bridgers was Qualified Executor thereof which on motion was ordered to be Certified.
