Northampton County, NC - Will of Thomas Ellis, 1838 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the name of God Amen! I Thomas Ellis of the County of Northampton, state of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament as follows- vizt- Item 1st I give and bequeath to my grandson Joseph James my small trunnel bed. Item 2nd I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary James Fifty dollars in addition to what I have before given her. Item 3rd. I give and bequeath to my daughter Harriet Rewles negroes Joe and Ailcey, two cows & calves, two sows and pigs, those bee hives, one mare (sp? Singscab), and Three hundred dollars (in lieu of her part of the Tarver land) to her and assigns forever. Item 4th I give and bequeath to my son Benjamin Ellis (after paying the leagacies before mentioned ___ Fifty dollars to Mary James and Three hundred dollaars to Harriet Rawles) all the rest and residue of my monies bonds and accounts, the tract of land on which I now live, my household and kitchen furniture, farming utensels, stock of all kinds, all the corn fodder and oats, with the growing crop; also the following negroes Charles, Maria, Dick, Amy and her children William and Julia Ann, Milly, Augustin Stephen, Demus, Jim, Martha and Mary and their increase to him his heirs and assigns forever. Item 5th. I give to Randolph Rawles one negro girl (unreadable) Maria and her increase for and in consideration of a legacy left his wife Harriet Rawles ( ____ Harriet Ellis) by her grand father Robert Ellis, for which I hold his receipt. Item 6th I give to Nathaniel James one negro named Ben for and in consideration of a legacy left his wife Mary James (late Mary Ellis) by her grand father Robert Ellis for which I hold his reciept. Item 7th I nominate and appoint my son Benjamin Ellis, and my friend William H. Gray my executors to this my last will & testament__ In Witness Whose of I have herunto set my hand Seal 12th day of April 1837.
