Northampton County, NC - Will of Joel Newsum, 1752 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the name of God Amen, the tenth day of January 1751, I JOEL NEWSUM of the county of Northhampton in North Carolina being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God therefore calling to mind mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, Do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. ITEM: I give and bequeave unto my son HOSEA NEWSUM my plantation whereon I now live from the swamp running up the branch on the east side of the plantation to the road line and eight head of cattle and eight head of hogs to his own liking and one bed and furniture. ITEM: I give and bequeave unto my son JOHN NEWSUM all the rest of land and eight head of cattle and eight hogs to his own choosing and one bed and furniture. All the rest of my estate I give to be equally divided between my son DAVID NEWSUM and JOEL NEWSUM and WILLIAM NEWSUM and ISAAC NEWSUM and my daughter MARY NEWSUM and of this my last will and testament I make and constitute, nominate, and appoint my brother WILLIAM HILYARD and JOHN DUKE my whole and sole executors, revoking and anulling of all former wills by me heretofore made, ratified, confirmed, this and no other to be my last will and testament.
