Henderson & Elizabeth Taylor Wedding Photo, 1910 This is a wedding picture circa 1910 Jacksonville, North Carolina, of Elizabeth Taylor Henderson and Hugh Thomas Henderson. My Grandfather Hugh Henderson would become one of Jacksonville's first full time Police Officers who would serve in the highest position of Chief and with the highest rank of Assistant Chief of Police serving Jacksonville for over forty five years. Many stories have been told to me about Captain Hugh, of how strong he was, and how he could hold two Marines up in the air breaking up fights. I have been told he could hide behind a telephone pole, and also of his kindness. Before becoming a Police Officer he was a stable boy at age 14 and in the years that followed before the Police Department he would loan money to people to earn the interest I assume. I know on many he lost as there are many deeds at the Courthouse today where he never foreclosed on. My Dad told me that Captain Hugh would go through his drawer on occasion and throw away deeds that he had not collected on due to the fact he felt the people truly could not pay him back. It is also interesting that he could not read. He signed by his Mark.
