Onslow County, NC - Huggins Cemetery ~~~~~~~~~~ Agustus Cicero Huggins is buried there as is his wife and father in law Richard Canaday according to the Lesesne Family Bible which is in the possession of James Bush of TN now that his father has passed away. Agustus Cicero Huggins was born 11-12-1840. The marker with 9-10-1879 belongs to Laura Pauline Huggins born 9-4-1879 and died 9-10-1879. This is a child of Agustus Huggins and his second wife Laura Canaday Huggins. Much of what had been Huggins land in NC is now part of an army base and there is no known record of any burials, or removal of burials, to be found. Some records compiled by the Historical Records Survey of N.C. Onslow Co, Jacksonville, NC: The Huggins Cemetery: This cemetery is located on N.C. highway #24, on right, in first block from the intersection of that highway with U.S. Hwy #17 in Jacksonville. It is situated nr. two large magnolia trees on vacant lot between home of Mr. Floy Ketchum and that of Mrs. Fletcher Marine. It is in poor condition. The stone markers are nearly all leaning, and the lettering very dim. It is now (1938) overgrown with trees and vines which make it almost inaccessible. All land, formerly owned by Augustus C. Huggins. Land was sold and tract where graves are located was exempted -- deed to that property reads that no one can ever have possession of it. The vacant lot now in front of graves, ideal lot for home in best residential section of town. Title to cemetery itself is supposedly in the hands of the town of Jacksonville and the county of Onslow. Land surrounding and adjoining graves owned in 1938 by W. Lee Humphrey, Verona, N.C. Formerly owned by Fred W. Hargett, deceased, of Jacksonville, NC.
