Onslow County, NC - Josiah Henderson Jr. to Hillary Henderson, 1839 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a transcription of a letter from Josiah Henderson Jr. a resident of the old Northeast Community now called kellum to his brother Hillary in Georgia. Dier Brother I once more take up my pen to right a few lines to you to let you know we are in tollaribul helth threw the goodness of God Hoping that these lines may find you and fammily in joyous good helth I receved yor letter dated the 3 of November and was more than gld to here from you once more I have nothing worth riting at present Only to let you know that I am living but a grate deale distrest in my mind at this time. Times are as livly in this cuntry as common terpentine is worth from $1.80 cts to 1.85 per barrel corn from 3 to two fifty per barrel pork from 5" to 6 per hundred. We hav seventeen in fammily We have nine children four sons and five daughters We never hav lost nar child as yet We hav five negros. I hop to see you in time if it shd be the wil of the Lord You rote me that you tht of starting to se us sum of thes days you wrote to me that yu was vary fat and clumsy You did not think that you cold stand the fortigue But I think if you wold starte you wod hold out I houp yu will come out to this cuntry and see us I hant in joyous good helth in several years I am liter at this time that I hav bin since I was grone I hav seen a grateale of truble aboute the deth of Brother Gabriel and Wif I minnig the astate Give my best regards to yor wife and children also to Brothers children to uncle Biverly Simmons and fammily Aunte Mary Haskins and all hur also to all iquiring friends if any Father Humphrey and Mother Humphrey givs ther best respects to you The old man is in bad helth at this time and Uncle David Simmons has bin vary sick but is some on the mend the last I hird of him Right to me evry opportunity. Lots not to be so neglectful in righting to each other I must conclud my bad rote leter May the Lord bless you my dier Brother and prosper you to the end and if we never see each other in this wirld may we meet in heaven where parting will be no moore.
