Great damage was done to the farms of Mr. P. Koonce and others. On G. K. Dickinson’s farm sixty acres of cotton besides corn and other crops were destroyed. Hail fell in great quantities, some of the stones being more than four inches in circumference. One the farm of Mr. G. D. Mattock, the storm tore up by the roots all the trees in his orchard; blew off the top of his gin- house, mashed one side of his dwelling house, and swept away sixty acres of fine cotton, leaving the ground as naked as it was before the cotton was planted. Near Barker’s bridge two schooners were capsized—the Gold Leaf and Millie B., nearly drowning two men who were on the Gold Leaf. One man was blown a hundred feet from his vessel, but strange to say was not much hurt. Additional Comments: The Gold Leaf, a schooner, with Captain Moore on the line (1876) between New River/Jacksonville to Wilmington, NC delivering naval stores for “Hall & Pearsall.” This schooner is also mentioned in the Jack Dudley book, Swansboro: A Pictorial Tribute, as also having been captained by Edwin Foster.
