A mass meeting of the Democratic citizens of Onslow county was held at Jacksonville, on the 2nd inst., for the purpose of appointing delegtes to the State and Congressional Conventions. The meeting was called to order by C. Thompson, chairman of the executive committee, who stated the object of the meeting. G. T. Farnell was requested to act as temporary secretary. On motion, A. J. Murrill was appointed permanent chairman, and G. F. Farnell secretary. A committee was then appointed to draft resolutions for the consideration fot the meeting, which resulted in the appointment of the following gentlemen: J. W. Spicer, Stump Sound; A. C. Huggins, Jacksonville; C. Thompson, Richlands; A. B. Carroll, White Oak; D. J. Sanders, Swansboro. While awaiting the report of the committee, Messrs. C. Koonce, Frank Thompson, Jr., and G. W. Smith, were called upon , who responded with thrilling speeches. Through Mr. A. C. Huggins, the committee reported the following: Resolved, That the course of our worthy Representative in Congress, Hon. Wharton J. Green, meets our approval and we recommend him for a renomination. Resolved, That we recommend for the office of Lieutenant Governor Maj. Chas. M. Stedman, of New Hanover, a man in all respects capable, worthy and deserving of the position, and one who will add strenght to the State ticket. Resloved, That whoever the State and Congressional Conventions may nominate we agree to bury all personal preferences and give to each our hearty and united support. The above resolutions were unanimously adopted as a whole. Then came appointments of delegates, which resulted as follows: STATE CONENTION. Stump Sound – Hill E. King, Dr. R. W. Ward; Jacksonville – John Mashburn, N. E. Armstrong; Richlands – E. Murrill, Frank Thompson, Jr.; White Oak – C. Gerock, C. S. Hewitt; Swansboro – G. S. Farnell, Major Russell; County at Large – S. B. Taylor, E. L. Franks, Jr. CONGRESSIONAL CONVENTION. Stump Sound – N. N. McMillan, J. W. Spicer, Abram Sandlin, R. W. Ward; Jacksonville – G. W. Taylor, G. Scott, G. W. Blake, Sr., B. L. Kellum; Richlands – David E. Sandlin, E. L. Franks, Sr., C. Stephens, S. B. Taylor; White Oak – Geo. D. Mattocks, G. W. Smith, A. B. Carroll, Wm. H. Mills; Swansboro – Sol. Gornto, Major Russell, E. W. Ward, A. F. Farnell, Jr.; County at Large – A. C. Huggins, T. B. Henderson. On motion, the chairman and secretary were added to the list of delegates to both the State and Congressional Conventions. On motion, the secretary was requested to send a copy of the proceedings to the New Berne Journal, Goldsboro Messenger and Wilmington Star for publication. Huggins (Probate Judge, Clerk of Superior Court) had been acquitted of the murder of his brother in law, Dr. Charles Lesesne, which had occurred (the shooting & acquittal) the week prior to the above meeting.
