NEWBERN HERALD 5-20-1809
Fifty Dollars Reward.
RAN AWAY from the Subscriber on the 22d of April a negro man by the name of 
JOHN, about 40 years of age, stout built upwards of 6 feet high, he is 
considerably ruptured, so it may be plainly perceived, and I believe he has a 
scare on one of his hands.  
He can speak some of the Spanish language, and speaks broken English, he was 
raised in St. Croix, (W.I.) but has been several years in this country -- 
perhaps he may endeavor to get on board some vessel, by passing for a free 
man, Masters of vessels and all other persons are hereby forwarned (sp) from 
harbouring or concealing of said negro under the penalty of the law.
Any person who will deliver me the said negro, or will confine him in any jail 
so that I get him shall be intitled (sp) to the above reward.

N. B. It is very likely the above negro is lurking about in the neighborhood 
of Edmond Hatch jun. on Trent, in Jones county.  E. W.
