Five or six steamers made their appearance near Swansboro' on the 22nd ultimo, but did not land in force until Saturday. They destroyed MR. BARNUM'S salt factory entire at Swansboro, and then went up Queen's Creek, and landed on Mr. I. N. SANDERS' farm, destroying much of the standing corn -- passed on to MR. HAWKINS' and COL. SANDERS' salt factories -- destroyed the former and damaged the latter considerably. Fortunately, the destruction of the salt factories was not as great as reported, some of them being at points they did not reach. They plundered houses, killed the hogs and cattle, and stole everything they could well remove, taking off about 50 negroes with them. They left on Sunday. Our correspondent says, that at the time, there were from 300 to 500 Confederate troops in the county, "who are paid by the government to protect the property of the citizens, but they did not lift a finger to prevent their depredations." He thinks by proper management our forces there could have taken or destroyed the entire force sent to destroy HAWKINS' and SANDERS' salt works.
